March 1967 Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda) March 14 Whale-Iskate, French Frigate Shoals Nest found resting or on the ground. Four birds in flight around the island. March 14 Trig D, FF Shoals Three flying around Island. March 17 Offshore Layson Island Browndie counts of the island at noon: 18 birds in flight. March 18 Layson Island About 30 birds observed in flight as we landed & set up camp. No complete count was made due to other activities. Several w/ eggs. March 19 Layson Island A mid-day count of the eastern half of the island turned up 27 birds in flight over the island. March 20 Lejerski Island About 20 birds in the air over the island counting. Only 2 birds observed on the ground. No eggs or chicks were found. March 21-23 Southeast Island Pearl + Hema Reef Birds paired & courting regularly throughout the visit. Two birds were found on eggs on a pile of coconut branches along with 6 other birds. One bird was attacked mid & Scavenged during the entire visit but had no egg upon departure. March 27 Three Island, Pearl + Hema Reef 1 bird in flight over the island. No nest found. C.D. MacCormack Special Account 1967 Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda) March 8 Nihoa Island 15-20 in air midday. Several birds were seen under rocks by various party members but no eggs or chicks were seen. Suspect that no one, including me, checked very hard. March 10 Necker Island Saw only 10-15 birds in the air during the 6 hour visit. No nests or birds on the ground were observed by the party. These may have been well down the steep slope where none of us ventured... March 11 Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals Saw 2 birds while releasing Red-Nihaa Funnel. One of the Coast Guard boys told me they had just come back after being absent for several months. He couldn't remember how long they had been absent. March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals Saw three birds while walking around the island: 2 under a Messerschmidt and one under a piece of corrugated roofing. Plan to check breeding status & bird them tomorrow. (1 bird on an egg!) March 12 East D., French Frigate Shoals Total of 6 birds in flight over the island at one time. March 10-12 Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals 3 birds flying around the island in late afternoon. A night survey of the island didn't turn up any on the ground. March 13 Trig Island, French Frigate Shoals None found nesting. Three flying over island.
