C.D. Hachman 1967 Species Account White Tern (Gygis alba) March 8 Wihua Island Nests down on cliffs couldn't check breeding status. Not enough observations for population estimates. Population probably several hundred to a thousand. March 10 Necker Island A few birds with egg were observed along the higher ridges and cliffs. Most birds were located along the steeper cliff areas where the nests couldn't be easily checked. Population appears to be around 500-1000 birds. Also found some small diving gannet on NW cape March 11 Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals About 15 birds around Coast Guard mess. Entire island was not surveyed. March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals. None present. March 13 Trig I., French Frigate Shoals None present March 14 [illegible] Whale-Shake, Fr. Fr. Shoals None present. March 17 Offshore Layson Island Two birds observed flying west from island in the early morning but none for remainder of the day. March 18 Layson Island Only about 8 birds were observed during an after dark check of the NW quarter of the island. One bird had a 3/4 grown nestling that was on a rock near the west shore on the edge of a dense growth of Seserola. All birds observed after dark (except one on Hachman, C.D. 1967 Species Account White Tern (Gygis alba) March 18 Layson Island rock) were not breeding on Scaerola sp. March 19 Layson Island About 100 birds were observed on a complete count of the island. One bird on an egg and 3 birds with 2 grown young were found. March 20 Lisianski Island Tideland count. About 40 birds on the entire island!! Only 1 egg, 1/2 mile on a dead branch of an Ironwood (Casuarina) about 5 feet above the ground! One adult observed feeding a white nestling. March 21-23 Southeast I., Pearl + Herre Reef Several birds were observed around the island during the visit. No nests were found. March 22 Star Island, Pearl + Herre. Reef Two birds sitting on an exposed shelf on the edge of the reef. No nests were observed. March 24-25 Sand I., Midway Atoll
