Hachuron, C.D. 1967 Species Account White-capped Tern (Arous tenuirostris) March 19 Layson Island Five or six birds were carrying nesting materials into the ironwood tree near camp. Several had what appeared to be leaves from Eupora up. March 20 Kiskaiki Island Birds found nesting in Ironwood (Casuarina) which they seem to prefer and Scaesola. Small stage from new first construction to nearly fledged young. About 30 nests with eggs, 5 with small downy young + 10 with nearly fledged young were observed. These northern birds do not employ plants for the nest as much as the ones on the southern side, (Phoenix & Livia do) do perhaps because such plants are not as abundant here. Materials used: Scaesola, Crosswax, Trilium, Boerhavia and several types of seaweeds. One nest of recent construction contained five small Portuguese man-o-war. The majority of nest were saddled on branches in forks. One nest was found nearly suspended in the "reef" of several small branches, suspended in a manner that is reminiscent of the Red-eyed Vireo (Vireos) Stems from a morning glory were also used in construction of this nest. Total population around 1350 adults to 500 adults March 21-23 Southwest I., Pearl + Heme, Reef 5 birds roosting on island (night of 21st). Occasional birds observed during the day. No notes. The CG personnel say that a large newly built on one end of the runway [East] every night but several trips, past that passed that area have not [illegible] located them.
