Hachwan, C.D. 1967 Species Account Borin d. Petrel (Pterodroma hypoleuca) March 20 Lisianski Island None observed in burrows or over the island during the short daylight visit. Hundreds observed over the ocean, apparently moving toward the island, as we departed around 5 p.m. No fresh breeding was observed. March 21-23 Saultree d., Pearl + Hervey Reef Numerous birds on the ground and in burrows during the night. None observed during the day. At night (both nights) about 150 birds were observed - mostly above ground. Numerous burrows were inspected but no eggs or chicks were found. March 22 Kaho, Seal + Kittrey d., Pearl+Hervey Reef None observed. Many burrows found, some of which may have been made by this species, but none appeared to be fresh. March 25 Eastern d., Midway Atoll None observed during a daylight visit March 24-26 Sand d., Midway Atoll Numerous small colonies here and there in residential areas (1 below 300 and the quarter area, 1 near Hanley Field, one near the boat harbor were the only ones observed). These except for the one near the boat harbor are being slowly eliminated by increased human activity. Very few birds were found in the other areas where they were formerly very common. March 26-30 Kure d., Kure Atoll Large numbers of birds in the air, but few on the ground in the antenna field. Full moon made the birds difficult to capture. Found 2 birds in a burrow - no eggs or chicks. Checked 41 birds and found 8 banded (March 26). Many birds on the ground tonight - perhaps due to the quiet winds. Checked out 150 birds and found 8 banded birds (March 27). Checked out 58 birds and found 4 banded one (March 28). Many in flight over the antenna field. C.D.Hachwan 1967 Species Account Bulwer's Petrel (Bulweria bulwerii) March 7 1 bird at sea on edge of feeding flock March 8 N.hoa Island 4 heard calling often, south side - in burrows Could not determine breeding status because all birds found were deep in burrows under rocks but suspect that they are presently courting. Birds were giving a long involved call note much unlike the coo-coo-coo note I'm familiar with. Ship's crew commented about a number of small black birds on the ship during the night - probably this species. March 10 Necker Island None were observed but we weren't on the island during the night. Probably on the island but lie in burrows during the visit. March 11-14 French Frigate Shoals None observed. March 18 Layson Island About 20 birds calling (full call) on the north end of the island from burrows well [illegible] sp. Most burrows blocked were shallow. These birds flew up atonal oil when handled which I've never seen this species do before. No paired birds were observed + no eggs were found in the few burrows found + chicked. One bird was heard calling down over the lagoon on the west side of the island. March 20 Lisianski Island None observed during a daylight visit (9-5) March 21-23 Pearl + Hervey Reef
