Hochman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Great Frigatebird (Fregata minor) March 28 Shear B. June Atall Five eggs were measured before + during the nest destruction that discouraged further measurements. Of those five eggs four appeared to be fresh by candling them against direct sunlight and one was dirty and opaque. March 29 Shear B. June Atall Did not capture any birds of this species at night. Several abortive attempts were made + the island was abandoned as too futile + too concealing. C.D. Hochman 1967 Species Account Sooty Tern (Sterna fuscata) March 7 off Kauai + Ni'ihau Islands. 29 birds observed in feeding flock as ship passed Stern with Ni'ihau Island. Numerous solitary birds + several small groups of 2-4 birds were also seen in this area. March 8 Nihoa Island Abundant over entire island nesting solitary or in dense clusters under heavy vegetation (chenopodium + sida). Most nests on bare ground but some were found on slightly indented pile of dead vegetation. We were unable to check the entire island due to lack of time + energy and the emphasis on the capture of 50 pair of Nihoa Finch. Population: many thousands, probably somewhere around 25,000 but this is pure guesswork. March 10 Necker Island Approximately 30,000 scattered over several slopes and forest ridges. Birds were in all stages of breeding from barely incubated eggs to flying young. In one area a few fresh chicks were seen. Birds nested in bare areas on the slopes, on little ledges, along the cliff sides and under dense growth of Chenopodium. About 25-30 % chicks. March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals Approximately 20,000 birds on the island just initiating their breeding cycle. Only a few eggs were found total on the west end of the colony.
