Hachwa C.D. 1967 Species Account Great Frigate (Fregata minor) March 17 Offshore Layson Island Birds, cent at dawn - several thousand birds in the air. Majority of birds seen from the ships were immature + females. Some observed feeding on garbage from the ship but only after it had floated several hundred yard from the ship. None came close to the ship. One adult female observed chasing a Red-footed Booby but results of those could not be determined because of distance + heavy swells. March 18 Layson Island No complete survey was attempted because of that activity. Numerous male displaying. A large number of birds on nests along west side of island all on Scaevola. Plan to survey three tomorrow. No hatched birds were found during a check of the NW quarters of the island. March 19 Layson Island Had to pull off island before a complete survey could be done. Birds are presently on eggs and empty nests. The majority of eggs are presumably fresh although [illegible] were checked. Population on island in close to 2000 birds. March 20 Laisanaki Island south About 200 flying immatures, near the [illegible] end of the island and a few in the interior, perched on Scaevola. A large number of males were displaying on empty nests of new construction. Of 60 nests checked only 20 contained an egg. Of 18 nests where the sex of its incubated bird could be determined 12 were male. Shelter of 18 eggs that were coiled were fresh. Nest construction who of Tindlume and all nests were located in Scaevola. Total nests about 200-250 on the entire island on the basis of an incomplete survey. Nests ranged in height from 1 foot to 3 feet. C.D.Hachwa 1967 Species Account Great Frigatebird (Fregata minor) March 8 Nichoa Island Scattered all over island in little clusters probably 7-8,000 birds. Checked 21 nests and found [illegible] of the eggs to be clean, pinkish when coiled (against sun) and the rest were dirty and opaque (well incubated ?). A large number of immatures, 2-3,000 are present, many still on nests. No small young observed. Of 31 birds sitting on nests: 11 males on eggs 10 females on eggs 4 males on empty nests 6 females on empty nests. March 10 Neeka Island About 200 nests scattered around the island. Birds were found in little clusters on Chneopodium around the edge of the ridges. A number of nests were found on the same slope as the bulk of the Red-footed Boobies in the Chneopodium. This plant species was used for the nest. The majority of nests were new construction but empty. Only 37 of 100 had eggs. March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals No nests. About 45 birds, mostly females + immatures were sitting on the east aid of the island during the afternoon. About the same number roosted on the island. March 13 Ning Island, French Frigate Shoals 1 flew over island - no immatures. March 14 Whale- Shark French Frigate Shoals Forty-six immatures were sitting in the nesting colony - many on old looking nests. Of 160 new nests were found as follows (66): males on nest: females on nest: Und one on nest: empty - 17 empty - 4 empty (new) - 38 1 egg - 63 1 egg - 31 1 egg - 13 All eggs that were checked (24) were fresh.
