Hachman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Red-footed Booby (Sula sula) Layson Island March 18 approach in the moonlight in the thick, crackly Scaevola. Several pairs were sleeping on nests but no eggs or chicks were observed. Total island population probably around 150 birds at the present time. March 20 Lizard Island About 130 birds present on the entire island most with nests. Of 85 nests checked only 18 contained eggs. The other nest all contained fresh vegetation. Nest construction primarily of Tribulus and small amounts of Boerhavia as in one nest Scaevola. Nests ranged in height from 1 foot to 4 1/2 feet. March 21-23 Southeast Island, Pearl + Hermes Reef 27 nests: 9 with eggs (1 pipped) 10 with chicks 8 empty, new construction 27 Chicks ranged in size from just hatched to large downy with no feathers ('9 1/2"), Construction was in Scaevola or on the ground for Solanum. (See measurements + description section). Roosting population about 65 birds. March 25 Eastern Is., Midway Atoll Hachman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Red-footed Booby (Sula sula) 26-30 March Green Is., Kure Atoll An afternoon count (3:30 p.m.) turned up 79 birds in the central roost area. An evening count in the turned up 82 birds in [illegible] aread. (March 26 near the radar reflector. March 28 - an early, afternoon count of the central roost area (1:00 pm) found 64 birds sitting in Scaevola. Started to check breeding status this afternoon but had to stop when male frigate, destroyed a nest every time I chased an adult away. Saw 1 nest with an egg completely demolished within a matter of minutes. March 29 - all attempts to work thru species failed. The species is just beginning its nesting cycle and birds are not yet to the point where they'll sit tight as we approached (literally crashed) through the Scaevola. Birds were flying at an approach of 15-100 feet. None were captured. No hatched chicks were observed during this visit during several nights of roost inspection.
