C.D.Hachwen 1967 Species Account Red-footed Booby (Sula sula) March 6 Oahu to Kauai 35 sec during crossing, most within 3 hours out of Honolulu Harbor. Most birds were sitting on the water in heavy rain squalls. All adults. March 7 Around Kilauea Pt. Light. Saw very few birds from the lighthouse colony while the ship celebrated the dawn Station. Only about 6 birds were observed. No naked birds were seen. March 8 Nihoa Island Sprinkled here and there over the island, Checked 10 nests and found 2 with eggs and 8 with fresh vegetation. Birds are apparently just starting to lay. March 10 Necker Island Population about 175 pair. Many birds on nests carrying or carrying vegetation. All nests had fresh vegetation. Of 106 nests, checked only 3 had eggs - only measured one of these. Birds prefered to nest on Chenopodium + used the species for the nest. Here were a few nests scattered around in the old Polynesian ruins but most were found along one slope in lush growth of Chenopodium. March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals Checked about 2/3rds of the island before the boat came back + we fixed dinner. Found 12 nests only 2 of which had eggs. Rest of nests were of recent construction-some still under construction. Nests were of Tridex + Chenopodium + some contained fresh Boerhaavia sprigs. One egg was popped. Nests were on Chenopodium or on old drillings or pieces of wood or metal left here when the original dawn Station was abandoned. After dark there Hachwen, C.D. 1967 Species Account Red-footed Booby (Sula sula) March 11 East Is., French Frigate Shoals (Contd) were about 80 birds on the island roosting. Six or seven pairs were on the nest together. About 8 birds roosted on the telephone poles. March 12 East Island, French Frigate Shoals. Found 5 more nests under construction - no eggs for an isled total of 17 nests w/ [illegible] only 2 that had eggs. March 13 Trig Island, French Frigate Shoals Twenty-nine nests: 14 with eggs (1 popped), 1 naked chick and 14 nests under construction. (w/ fresh vegetation) 32 birds were observed. March 14 Whale - Shark, French Frigate Shoals. Four nests were found on slightly elevated nests on the ground. I was seem surprised to find nests on the ground - although this is a fairly common occurrence on some of the equatorial islands it may not occur so often on the leeward Islands. Two of these nests were new but empty, the other two contained fresh eggs. Fourteen nests were found on the entire island: empty but new construction - 87 1 egg - 6 naked chick - 14 March 17 Offshore Laysan Island Occasional birds flying over the ocean on the west side of the island throughout the day. March 18 Laysan Island Chief of the NW quarter turned up about 25 birds all roosting on Seaweed sp. Six of these were returning (previous handed) and two new birds were headed. Birds were difficult to
