Species Account
Blue-faced Booby (Sula dactylatra)
March 8 N.koa Island
2 on rock ledge halfway to top - south side.
seen to be only 2 on isled at present.
March 10 Necker Island
Breeding birds were scattered along the ridge
in the bare areas. Nests usually occurred in
little clusters - sometime 5-6 feet apart. Counted
108 nests:
43 w/ 2 eggs (also dont w/ eggson low caps)
23 w/ 1 egg (2 of these pipped)
1 w/ 1 egg + 1 naked chick
2 w/ small naked chicks
37 nests - unknown contents.
All birds were reluctant to leave their nests.
Possibly because they are seldom disturbed or possibly
because many were on eggs that were about to hatch.
Found one bird with a light blue egg - about the
color of the lines on standard noteboks labeled pages.
Measured a number of eggs; 8 sets of 2 ad 2 nests w/
one egg. Didn't have time to measure anymore because a
compass gummed up my calipers.
March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals
About 15 birds roosting on the isled after
dark. Captured 2 with bands + the rest spooked.
Two of the birds observed were subadults. No nests.
March 13 Trug Island, French Frigate Shoals
Twenty-four nests: 6 w/egg, 17 w/ 2 eggs, + one
with 1 egg ad 1 naked chick. Most about half were banded
but only managed to capture three in the daylight. There were
41 adults on the isled.
