Hachway, C.D. 1967 Species Account Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda) March 24-26 Midway Atoll Hundreds in the air over Easter Island + scattered throughout the Scavola. Several eggs were found + measured. Not common on Sand Island. No young was made. March 26-30 Green Is., King Atoll 24 in the air on the afternoon of March 26 with much calling and displaying. March 27 - one circuit of the Northeast to south Beaches about 7 birds were found under Scavola - all were checked but none had eggs. March 28 - checked out 20 birds in thick Scavola around the North + east sides of the island + only found 1 egg. 16 birds in flight over the central coast at 2 p.m. March 29 140+ birds in flight over eastern end of island and 85+ birds flying over western end of island at 1 p.m. C.D. Hachway 1967 Species Account Golden Plover (Pluvialis dominica) March 8 N. Noon Island 5 singles, 1 group of 2 observed during the entire day March 10 Necker Island 2 observed March 11 Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals Three birds observed on the runway in the vicinity of the mess hall. March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals 11 Birds counted on a circuit of the island. March 13 Trug Is., French Frigate Shoals 2 bird around beach March 14 White Skate, French Frigate Shoals 8 birds foraging on beach and theroles March 19 Layson Island 75 birds observed on a complete circuit of the island. 560 birds were counted on the NW corner of the lagoon. The majority of these were in the lagoon in 1"-3" deep water about 100'-150' feet from shore. Only two of the birds were in full breeding plumage. About 10 birds were molting + had large blood splashes on their breasts. The remainder were still in full white plumage with no sign of molt. Total population probably exceeds 1200 birds. Lisianski Island March 20 About 35 birds observed on a circuit of the beaches and a survey of the interior on the northern half of the island.
