Hardman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Laysan Albatross (Diomedea immutabilis) March 19 Laysan Island No estimate was made of chicks because of the early + unexpected departure from the island. Judging from what was seen this must be close to 30,000 or so chicks on the island. March 20 Lisianski Island No estimate made due to short visit + limited time for a survey. Population probably in several thousand adults with nesting. March 21-23 Southeast I., Pearl + Hermes Reef Chick count - 5300. Most nests off the beach crest into the interior of the island. March 22 Cross I., Pearl + Hermes Reef Chick count - 25. 350 nests had been abandoned on this island for an unknown reason. Nests eggs were everywhere. March 22 Seal I., Pearl + Hermes Reef Chick count 34. About 175 abandoned nests were found. March 22 Kittery I., Pearl + Hermes Reef Chick count - #0 48 March 16 North I., Pearl + Hermes Reef (counting chick) Chick count 500 made by Charles S. Robbins. Hardman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Laysan Albatross (Diomedea immutabilis) March 24-25 Midway Atoll This species is everywhere one looks: on lawns, on the golf course, under thick vegetation, on the runways, on the roads etc. etc. Impossible to even begin guessing at the total population. No time to survey little island in anything other than a haphazard manner. March 26-30 Green I., Kure Atoll Started checking the interior for Laysan chicks in the afternoon of the 27th but was stopped by winds + rain for several hours. See map on next page with comparison of these totals with those obtained by Charles S. Robbins on 9-10 February 1967. On the morning of the 27th on the west end of the runway near the bird park I found an extremely small Laysan chick. It was 3½ inches high sitting relaxed (head down) and 6" long (sitting). The legs were completely covered with down. It was being brooded by a female adult who first found.
