Hachman 1967 Species Account Soot Storm Petrel (Oceanodroma markhami) 14 March Whale-Shale, FF Shoals 2 chicks: 1 very small + damp + 1 about 3/4 grown with primaries out of [illegible] sheaths feed in shallow humons side graze! 18 March 18 Lagoon Island Gene Kenmille found one bird near the lagoon + collected it. Saw several other near lagoon. March 20 Luaisaki Island None observed during a daylight visit. (9-5) March 21-23 Southeast I., Pearl + Hemu, Raf Birds were found on the ground as in burrows in the interior of the island. No eggs found. About 10 downy chicks (with primaries just out of sheaths) were found in various burrows. Total population [illegible] several hundred. About 7 female birds were observed but none were captured because of the moonlight. Population several hundred. March 24-26 Midway Atoll None observed or heard.
