Hachron, C.D. 1967 Species Account Christmas Island Shearwater (Puffinus nativitatus) March 21-23 Pearl + Howers Reef None observed on any of the islands March 25 Eastern Is. Madway Atoll Saw about 10 pair and a number of single birds with Scareole Thrush. March 26 - 30 Green Is., Kure Atoll Saw 4 birds in flight over the runway at dusk. Could not find any birds on the ground (March 28) Saw two birds flying over the antenna field but none on the ground on the evening of March 28. C.D. Hachron 1967 Species Account Boni's Petrel (Pterodroma hypoleuca) March 9 At Sea 1 bird flying past ship about 1 hour after leaving Nihau Island March 12 Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals Found a colony of about 300 birds actively courting + digging burrows. Some birds in burrows that were about 3 feet long. No eggs were found in about 25 burrows that was checked. Most birds were located on the NE side of the island in the vicinity of the two tall radio masts. Banded 100. March 17 Laysan Island Several Thousands in flight around island between dawn and about 9 am. Very few during the rest of the day until just about dusk 6:40 or so. At this time there were large numbers moving back to the island. March 18 Laysan Island This species is everywhere on the island. Birds were evenly distributed through the NW quarter of the island. Many birds were calling + courting in flight at dusk. Numerous pairs on the ground were paired? Many are presently digging burrows at present. One bird I found in a foot deep burrow on the northern end of the island had a freshly incubated egg which contained a well developed chick (about 5 days from hatching). The egg was broken open when the burrow caved in under me. The adult was dug out + released. Very few of the birds inspected were banded (only a few new combs had bands). The total population is probably & in excess of 10,000 birds.
