C.D. Hackman 1967 Species Account Noddy Tern (Anous stolidus) Marshall & Nikau Island 1 downy young, 1 egg, most chicks 1/2 to 3/4 grown. Saw about 20 chicks nude, rather knittle mostly. Here [illegible] found a fair number of eggs here and there. Have no idea regarding total population although it must amount to several thousand birds. March 10 Necker Island None were observed. March 11 East Island, French Frigate Shoals Found 33 nests on a partial circuit of the island toward duck. All but 1 had eggs. Birds were on all 33 nests. One egg - accidentally broken - was barely incubated. Roosting population about 300 birds. March 12 East Island, French Frigate Shoals Found 15 additional nests for a total of 45 nests on the island. March 13 Twig I., French Frigate Shoal 37 nests were found. Total nude present: 175 birds. March 14 White- Skate, French Frigate Shoals 117 nests with fresh or barely incubated eggs. One egg broken by a bird as it left the nest was fresh. One 7/8 grown chick was observed. About 1500 adults were sitting on the beaches in four large groups. March 15 Leston Peninsula Several hundred birds were in flight over the island now passed by around 500 yds to the south. Hackman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Noddy Tern (Anous stolidus) March 17 Offshore Layson Island Several birds observed flying from island in the morning. (Total island population close to 1000 birds at the present time.) 1 bird with an egg. No count made. March 20 Lisianska Island Only about 75 birds were observed. No nests or young seen found during a partial survey of the northern half of the island. March 21-23 Southeast D., Pearl + Hermes 9 birds found roosting on the island (night of 21st).
