Hachinson, C.D. 1967 Species Account Blue-footed Booby (Sula dactylatra) March 19 Lagoon Island Two birds were looing along the northern beach at 10 am. No nest were found around the beach crest. Only 1 nest was found on the entire island although the east + southern portion of the island were not carefully surveyed due to lack of time. No roosting colonies found or seen. March 20 Lagoon Island Walking along the beach crest around entire island. None observed in the interior of the island. Partial count of the beach crest for 1/3rds of the island (made while tagging birds + turtles). Single: Adult birds with: 2 eggs - 27 (one with a eggged egg) 1 egg - 10 1 egg+1 chick - 0 Adult male with: 2 eggs - 10 1 egg - 5 1egg+chick - 3 Unknown nests not checked - 174/1111 One large downy chick and four small downy chicks were observed. Five nests were found with small naked chicks one of whi[t] crossed out contained 2 naked chicks - just hatched today. March 21-23 Southeast Island, Pearl + Hernon Reef Sixteen nests found: AM 2eggs: 4 AM 1egg - 1 AF - 2eggs - 7 AU - 2eggs 4/16 No chicks were observed. March 22 Seal Island, Pearl + Hernon Reef 23 nests as follows: AF on 2 eggs - 12 AF on 1egg - 2 AM on 2eggs - 3 AM on 1 egg - 2 AU unknown contents - 4 No chicks were hatched. All birds were on open coral sand or in coral rubble away from vegetation. March 22 Kitty Island, Pearl + Hernon Reef One nest was observed but not checked for contents. No chicks were observed. All nests were sticks on sandy beach. March 25 Eastern D., Maiden Atoll Several nesting in a restricted city area. The nests were not checked for content. March 26-30 Green D., Line Atoll 22 birds were observed in antenna field-many of these nesting. Birds were difficult to work in the full moonlight. The land was handled but through the glare + descent a ship stopping all landing for the night (28 March) (27 March) Checked nests + measured eggs in South Antenna field March 28 Worked all the birds in the North Antenna field. None that were observed escaped-the birds seemed reluctant to fly for some reason. Captured + marked 75 returns. During the day the nests were surveyed in this area and in the South antenna field and found 43 nests in both areas as follows: South Antenna field: AM 2eggs - 3 AU -1 egg 1 AF - 2eggs 1 AF 1egg - 1 6 eggs + 1 immature
