C.D. Hacken 1967 Species Account Turtle species March 9 Nikau Island 1 large, greenish turtle in core near landing spot as we March 10 Necker Island Three were sunning on the edge of Shark Bay. Two of these were successfully flipped and tagged. Several smaller turtles were also seen around the island. March 11 East I., French Frigate Shoals One medium sized Turtle was observed offshore for several hours in the afternoon. March 13 Trig Is., French Frigate Shoals Managed to flip + tag 13 of 23 turtles. Most were very large males. One female had a serious infection or inflammation in its eye. A male had a large portion of its left rear flippers missing. Another male was deformed on its left side with a large depression: Recaptured 2 turtle that were previously tagged. March 14 Whale-Shale, Fr. Fr. Shoals None observed March 14 Off Trig I., Fr. Fr. Shoals Flipped + tagged an additional 15 turtles out of 23 that were on the beach. Hochren. C.D. 1967 Species Account Turtles March 11 Whale-Shale, Fr.Sh None March 17 off Layson Island One large turtle was observed from the ship around 1:30 pm. March 19 Layson Island 2 large turtles were observed on the beach during a complete island circuit. One large male was flipped + tagged. March 20 Lisianski Island Tagged 9 new + March 21-23 Southeast I., P+H Reef Recovered 5 + Tagged 10 new. March 26 Midway Atoll Saw 4 while flying down the lagoon enroute to Kure Atoll. March 26-30 Kure I., Kure Atoll None observed.
