Hackman 1967 Species Account Hawaiian Monk Seal March 8 Nihoa Island 2 adults in core near landing on south side of island March 9 Nihoa Island 1 adult in core near landing as we hauled gear down the cliff. March 10 Necker Island Five adults and 1 subadult were sunning themselves on the rocks near Shark Bay. None were tagged. March 13 Trig B, FF Shoals Tagged: 8 pups (2 male, 4 female & 2 unk sex) Rescued: 7 - adult female (5 with pups) 1 - adult male 2 - subadult males 1 - subadult female Total Tagged: 8 pups + 3 subadults March 14 Whale-Steak, FF Shoals AF - 6 Unclassified adult - 1 Subadult male - 4 5 Pups tagged - 3 male + 2 female 4 subadult males tagged 1 recovery (USNM) - retagged with metal clip March 14 Trig B, FF Shoals Tagged: 1 additional pupa just born - umbilical and still attached - & gave 1 additional adult female & island (for total of 8 adult females on Triggell with pups). March 11-12 East L, FF Shoals Tagged 5 pups + 2 subadult . Total population: 5 pups. 4unk. subadult, 1 male subadult, 4 AF, 2 AM, 4 unknown adults. Hackman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Hawaiian Monk Seal March 19 Necker Island Made a complete survey of the island beaches which took 3½ hours starting at 8:45 am: AM - 45 AF - 54 Subadult male - 30 Subadult female - 22 Subadult unknown 7 Adult unknown 13 Male pup 12 Female pup 7 Unknown pup 9 / 199 seals Of the 54 adult females, 18 had small pups and 6 had large pups. One subadult male was found along the northwest beach that had suffered a severe back injury - Somehow or other it had torn a great gash in its back (flesh? or chalk?). This was rotting and appeared to have a massive infection. The seal could not move its hind quarters very well and made no effort to get away from us even though it was only about 4 feet from the water. A subadult male was also found dead & appeared to be freshly died. An unknown age subadult & a boldly disengaged adult and a small pup were also found dead on Granville beach. One adult female was observed on the west lead that was in the process of giving birth. Tagged 33 (20 pups)
