Hachman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) March 24 Midway Atoll, Sand Island 1 Adult male observed flying over the downtown section of the island accompanied by about 150-200 White Terns. Charles S. Robbins has observed this bird on numerous occasions on various parts of the island since his arrival here in January of this year. It frequented the over-run area until the rats dried up (probably raty shoalbirds). Since that time it has been circulating around the atoll. One of the pilots informed me that he had observed the falcon eating a rat along side the main runway last month. Charles Robbins informed us that the way to tell the harsh is around is to watch the White Terns. Where terns vacate, and fuss at the falcon, where's he goes. March 30-31 Sand Isd., Midway Atoll Not observed during this period. Hachman, C.D. 1967 Species Account Canary March 25 Sand Is. Midway Atoll Say 4 of the 9 or 10 birds that are supposed to be on Sand Is. - the only canary living in the wild in the United States. One bird was in full song at mid day. These birds look like the common cage canary but their wings are white. The song is the sweetest I've ever heard - full of trills - all in much fuller than that of caged canaries. The birds were in a grove of Ironwood when observed. March 30-31 Sand Is., Midway Atoll Cool weather. Not singing. Not observed during this period.
