Hachem, C.D. 1967 Field Notes March 20 Lisianski Island Landed on the island around 9 am in the Whale boat. Spent until 1:30 p.m. making a complete island circuit with Eric + Ernie in order to census and tag seals + turtles. Returned to camp & ate a quick lunch before heading out to measure eggs. The thick growth of Scaevola made walking a chore, especially when combined with the large numbers of shearwater-petrel burrows on the island. The soil on the island in the firat sand I've encountered on any island and the burrows are in really. Nornally, as light as I am, I can skitter across the tops of burrow without carrying too many of them in. This was not true on Tofuya & certainly isn't true on the island. About halfway across the island a burrow caved in while I was measuring a Red-footed Booby egg and I cracked my knee against one of the Scaevolae. It's three turned black + blue almost immediately, but didn't hurt very much. Since that we were scheduled to leave the island at 5:00 pm, this wasn't time enough for a complete survey of the island or anything more than a cursory check of the various bird populations. In the 3 hrs I barely managed to run a fairly decent survey of the southern half of the island. Saw several Red-footed Boobies but couldn't capture them - both Red-footed Boobies. The whaleboat returned at 4:30 pm instead of at 5 pm as scheduled so I was unable to get more than 12 sets of Blue- faced Booby eggs measured. During the 3 hours I was able to get measurements of eggs + nest descriptions p. 17 Hawaiian Noddy, 20 Great Frigates, 26 Grey-b. Tern, 18 Red-footed Booby, 13 Blue- faced Booby & 1 Fairy Tern. Had to check over 200 nests for these measurements. The majority of Red-footed Boobies were in nests but only 18 birds, of 65 or nests checked, had eggs. Had to check 60 Great Frigates nests, to get 20 egg measurements. As with other island populations, on this trip, we are a little too sad. Most birds are on fresh or back incubated eggs. Seabirds Terns are similar but not down during the day. The Blue-faced Boobies are the exception to this statement. On Lisianski we found one large young and four (4) small diving young in addition to four nests with small naked chicks. Hachem, C.D. 1967 Field Notes March 20 Lisianski Island Vegetation was fairly lush, Crocrodia, Portulaca and Tribulus were all in full bloom. The coconut trees and dense growth of Scaevola were in good condition as were the two coconut trees (we drank the milk from two coconuts + planted another). During the island circuit we found several very small turtles which we tagged. These turtles could be easily picked up + carried by one man. Aside from the several we tagged as this five or six of similar size were observed in the water. We saw no sharks around the insular reef nor did John and Dick, who did a great deal of diving in several areas. When we returned to the ship we learned that they had seen what they described as "two hundred" around the ship. At least 25 had been shot with an M-2 rifle & had been seen to sink. The crew of the ship seemed to have enjoyed this day. We were back on the ship by 5:10 pm and heading for Pearl + Hermes by 6 pm. Sailed out at 8:15 p.m. March 21 Pearl & Hermes Reef (Next page)
