Hachman, C.D. 1965 March 8 Jervis Island Paul made a shorebird count this morning (dressed as usual in sweaters + jockey shorts) and found only two species present: Golden Plover (25) and Wandering Tattler (3). This is an extremely low shorebird total for an island of this size. It is very interesting to note that there are no Ruddy Turnstones or Bristle-thighed Sandpipers present. On previous visits the shorebird totals have been quite respectable. Paul noted that a few of the Golden Plovers were nearly in full breeding plumage. (I wonder if high rates in the recent past account for the low total?) Cast hunting during the day produced only one more cast - another lactating female. Sacked out early in the evening and got up at 10:30 to go out birding. I hounded until 4 a.m. and managed to get 99 birds with my shoddy footwear and blazing speed. By 4am I had one solid cramp in my left foot so I hobbled back to the house and called it a night. The toe is feeling better with each passing day. Tonight I covered about 3 1/2 miles before the toe acted up too much. The lymph gland on my left side has lost all of its soreness and swelling. Now the one on my right side is the only one that is bothering me. She net result seems to be a general overall feeling of tiredness and total lack of energy. In spite of the fact that I had about 9 hours of sleep today I was worn out by 12am. If it doesn't improve tomorrow I'll go out to the ship and take the rest cure with Beat Fisher who has been restricted to the ship for two days by the medic.
