Hachiman, S.D. 1965 Journal 97 March 8 Jamie Deland We were tired to camp and sacked out. Because my toe hurts so bad in my shoe, I have borrowed a pair of Ralph's while as a size larger. Originally I was wearing a [illegible] of Paula which are 3/2 size larger. The net result shoulder a stiffening up of my ankle from walking differently so that now into a toes up as to which side worse - the toe or the ankle. Life gets quite unusable out here if you do anything to hurt your foot. Cuts quickly become painful, slow healing infections. The simple act of wearing shoes is insufficient irritation to keep most of the infections from healing. Once you get an infection you get carried in the vicious circle in which you spend half of your time treating your wounds and the other half in irritating them and making them worse. The bird situation here is bad. Only three clubs formed up tonight - amounting to about 700 birds (as compared to 5 clubs for 1200 birds last night.) The beach crest on the Leeward side is almost completely devoid of Blue-faced Boobies tonight. I'm beginning to wonder where they all are because we've seen very few Blue-faced at sea this trip. They must have all found an island somewhere else where they're safe from our midnight assaults.
