Aside from the increase of [20] vegetation the exterior of the cone, the slopes of the mountain itself, does not present much change in appearance from that of 1908. The coarser, loosely compacted ash has been largely washed off, leaving behind an increased exposure of- lapilli composed of countless little bombs or rounded bits of lava that became rounded and more or less nearly spherical in shape as they cooled from fusion before falling to the ground. The fine, dust-like ash retains more of the rain that falls upon it than does the coarser ash and its particles adhere to form a firm and resistant mass.
