The Club des Montagnards of Guadeloupe maintains a rest and bath house beside the pool for the convenience of its members and guests. My friend and I rested for a few minutes near the pool enjoying the view over the southwestern portion of the island and the Caribbean Sea which is to be obtained from a clearing in the woods which was once occupied by a dwelling house and its garden. Then we pressed on the through diminishing forest and at its upper limit stepped
