The Danes' houses are sub-
stantially built of lumber, mostly
of course from Denmark, and have
double windows, which are provided
with solid board shutters. The
stone foundations are reinforced
with turf outside, and further
protection from the intense cold
of winter is secured by banking
the houses with snow up to the
