7 Island Summary During the trip observations were made on both Palmyra and Christmas Island. Palmyra Island Sooty Tern Palmyra was visited on 28-29 Sept. and again on 21 October. The following bird species were observed - a large colony of Sooty Tern (2000 adults) nesting on the runway. In Sept. very few of the young were able to fly and in October almost all were flying. Red-footed Boobies were roosting in the Scavoels bushes on the smaller islets at the entrance of the lagoon and several nests were seen on the cause-way. Brown Booby Two of this species were seen on the causeway and one was on an egg. Great Frigatebird Several Frigatebirds were seen in the Coconut palms but no nests were observed. Hawaiian Noddy This was the only noddy observed on Palmyra. There were many nexts in the coconut palms but no young or eggs were observed. Fairy Tern This tern was frequent in scattered individuals or pairs about the island but no eggs or young were seen. American Golden Plover An estimated 200 individuals of this species were observed about the island being most abundant on the runway and windward shore. 2 were collected.
