Observations within 50 miles of land Brown Booby Much less frequently seen this bird mixed quite freely with the Red-feet. It was most abundant around Palmyra where 25 were seen and at Christmas Island where 15 were seen. One was seen off Fanning. Masked Booby The Masked Booby was first seen off Fanning where two were sighted, but were most numerous off the southeast tip of Christmas Island where more than 50 adults were seen. Great Frigatebird Frigatebirds were common to all the islands but were most abundant on Christmas. The Lesser Frigatebird was not seen or at least not identified. Sooty Tern Sooty Terns were observed in greatest numbers near Christmas Island and next at Palmyra. At both Washington and Fanning they were almost totally replaced by noddies. Common Noddy The larger Common Noddy was not represented in large numbers anywhere. It was the only observed around Palmyra but was seen with the other noddies around all the other islands. On several instances this bird was observed sitting on the water in feeding flocks. Hawaiian Noddy The smaller Hawaiian Noddy was seen for the first time off Washington Island. Here and around Fanning they almost totally replaced Sooty Terns.
