Dear Mae Esterline,
I was not aware that the museum did not have my field notes
or the weather data for the November 1964 Cruise of the Charles H. Gilbert.
Regarding my field notes which I have at hand at the moment, I assumed they
had been Xeroxed along with all the other field notes. There was no
official report on the trip because we were never out of sight of land.
We did not stop at any port during the trip.
I don't know anything about the weather data since we didn't keep any
on either of the Gilbert trips.
I have filled in the map as you requested and will add here some of the
particulars.
Stopped off the southwest coast of Oahu on 10 Nov. in the lee
of the island for the night.
Moved to the northwest coast on the llth of Nov. then across
the channel to east shore of Kauai (crew wanted to be close
enough to the island to get T. V. reception.)
Traversed along the north coast of Kauai in 12th then into the
channel between Kauai and Niihau and back to a position just
of the southwest coast of Kauai for quiet lee waters and good
T. V. again.
On the 13th we ran south of Niihau to Kaula Rock and Island the
same place then back along the north side of Niihau and were
at the northeas t end of it by sunset.
Sunrise of the llth found us of the Northwest coast of Oahu.
Spent entire day on the North side and were offMoku Manu
at sunset.
On the 15th we were in the channel between Molokai and Oahu
in an area called Penguin bank.
Hard winds had blown since the 20th of October but finally stopped on
the llth of November.
