The palea awn is quite black at maturity when the palescence became brown. The lower palea is mostly gillous so that the awn appears to be centrally attached. The upper palea conspicuously grooved on the back and produced into a short mostly incurved awns which projects beyond the lower palea. The very nearly allied S. viridescens HBK. was collected in the semi region by the botanist of Cape. Fitgreaves' Expedition. Both these species resemble more the habit of Oryzopsis than of Stipa though they fall into the latter genus as limited by Trinus. Stipa pennata Lorini; Frin. & Rupr. Stip. p. 80. Var.
