Perennial, caespitose, clothed at the base with murrocent sheaths, culms compressed, rigid rough - a foot or more high. Sheaths rough,ceeding the nodes. spikes short - truncate. Leaves of the sterile shoots 2/3 as long as, or equaling the culm, concol- cate setaceous - rigid - sculous - often recurved. Culm leaves short - 1/2
