Florets 4— the 1 or 2 lowest perfect but others stercile. Lower palea coriaceous with 7 setae & 6 ciliateæ which are longer than the setæ & have 7 clefts on the back with pallid yellow on the backs & margins below with white hairs. Upper palea longer than the lower strongly recurvate & sometimes white at the apex. Styles stigmas purplish with long rough purple hairs. 2 spikes purplish (120 more) Cotula puppifloroides Nth. This remarkable grass does not seem to have been before noticed as a native of North America — The original specimens were from Peru. The stems are about 2 feet high bearing a large panicle & the plant at first has much the aspect of a large flowering Eragrostis. The glumes are many nerved & 6 flowered— The lower paleas about 5 fist with 9–11 aristæ, three of which are longer than the others, & paleae & awns mostly purple.
