"Calam" 6 inches to a foot in height (Perennial?) branching for its whole length, scabrous except a minute pubescence at the nodes. Sheaths loose, smooth, mostly shorter than the internals triguce acute lacerate. Leaves. The old ones about 2 inches long, 1 line wide scabrous on the upper surface & margins, complete. Panicles slender 1-1½ inches long, axil & pedicels scabrous, branching below, branches erect. The lower 5-6 flowered. The upper 1-2 flowered. The upper leaf often equally the panicle. Spikelets 1½ lines long, glumes 1 line long some what curiuate, rough on the midnerve scabute fine minute. Inferior palea 1½ lines long & 3 nerved. Rough on the whole & at the apex. Superior palea some- what shorter 2 nerved & scabrous on the back. Grain congealed - Cookes Spring, Bridelow - Bright no 746 (1849) & 1953 (1857-52) Hender New Hepids. no 958. Resembles somewhat V. utile, but much shorter. Stem branching from the apils of the persistent leaves of the previous year, distinguished by its leafy erect panicle, stronger leaves & acute & somewhat pubesce The glumes are also shorter in proportion to the paleae, the lower of which is 3 nerved.
