28th D. Richardson 1938 40 General Account we set along the under of the grass and land som 50-60 yd south of th stream. This morning (10:00) the Bika left for the new lake whi we had put party waitd for its arrival. From the lake the party was transported to Bomford camp (18 minutes flight). This concludes the opening of the trail through from th [illegible] to Kallama distance estimated to be 16 days of travel. A radio from von Arden today stated that it was 3 days from starting place in Grand Valley to the new lake. Aug 21 Lake Kallama, Netherlands New Guinea 3225m. 192 mouse traps, 190 rat traps, 21 stick traps- 2 Hydromys, 2 Rattus, 1 Pogonomys (oth specimen brought in yesterday), 10 Stenomys, 2 Pseudochirus. This morning and early afternoon tended traps and prepared specimens. Late afternoon went across by ski and looked about a good fire which had been burning for the past 3 or 4 hrs. The fire is in the upper part of the valley burning along the heavy green. The far edge of the small stream, and at the upper edge of the grass when it borders the lowly [illegible]. There were no mammals and birds about the fire. I saw several trails in front of the fire to see if the animal life was moving before it but apparently it was not for no rats came out even though there were numerous runways in the region. Aug 22 Lake Kallama, Netherlands New Guinea 3225m. 192 mouse traps, 190 rat traps, 21 stick traps- 3 Phascolagus, 2 Hydromys, 1 Pogonomys, (1 Pseudochirus skull only, said age), 3 Stenomys. This morning tended traps and prepared specimens. The afternoon reset 96 rat traps.
