Aug 17 Lake Kallerna Netherlands New Guinea 3225 m. 185 mouse traps, 190 rat traps, 22 stick traps. - 1 Dasyurus, 2 Sturnorge, 2 birds This morning we spread the Dasyurus and collected the line of 75 traps set, stick traps which were set from the head of the grassy valley over the spur to the west (north of camp). The afternoon we went to the traps beginning along the north south side of the outlet stream and following it along for 2 kilometers setting traps along the high grass and rocks while bordering this sluggish stream. Half of the traps were set along this stream, the other half on the hill slopes to the south of the stream. The line passes through the following types of habitat: thick grass; open land with grass and green undergrowth; thick land and shrub tree in a moist canyon, moss dependent; over a dry brashy ridge with moss and grass, down a dry brashy yard with scattered land traps, grass, and one flat brashy area. The patrol of 25 men including Paul Brown, Ira Gulo, etc. did not return yesterday as per accident so the morning another patrol of 3 soldiers, 1 Dyed, 2 corporals were sent in search and to deliver food to them. The afternoon both parties returned having successfully located a satisfactory collecting camp on the north north east slope of Willemerna top. It is some 6 km distant from our camp here. They brought back with them a portion of a Walloongo skull and reported seeing many numbers of others and also large runways of animals which appear to be large rats.
