July 3 Ballaria Nethlands New Guinea. 443 traps - 1 Katina This morning being Sunday we took a trip, something like the past week's day off. This, however, was in our newly acquired motor boat to Kum and then on to the Keen's plantation. From here we purchased 2 half gram Dendrolas which I shall attempt to keep alive for studying. A big history study comparing Dendrolas Phalyns and Doropsin would prove very interesting. This morning an adult & Phalegeus was brought in. It will be prepared tomorrow. The evening from 8-10 I spent hunting in the jungle south east of Ballaria. The boys saw a few Hippoides in the glass which they caught. I also saw a Mabongo skink crawling about the thick undergrowth. It was about 2 meters off the ground running along small limb and now and again hesitating to feed around. When startled it sought the high undergrowthed grass for escape. The character that led me to part it in Mabongo rather than Katina was the post whiteful fur of the belly and the shiny shape. I believe that it is the species common them in the traps in this vicinity. I also saw then a very large fruit bats hanging near the top of a tall tree. This tree or a neighboring one contained number of small (1/2") like fruits. I guess that the bats was feeding on these fruits for at time, it poured almost like rain from the limbs side and fruits that came down personally as the result of this feeding.
