hunting about the head of the lagoon. I saw 3 of the lays up of [illegible] hopping in the second growth vegetation bordering the lagoon. They were near where the colony was run some days ago. Also shot 1 Phalanger m. which was in the large forest thus bordering the lagoon. Returned afternoon. Set Stevenson took up the rat and mouse traps set at the point. Stevenson flew as to be next of the other side of the river. This morning 2 turtles were taken from the mouse set on the exposed land (close to the flood) at the mouth of the small stream coming into the lagoon. It was in a similar spot that Rod found the eggs (allobii) several days ago. Evening out for bats, shot 1. Later out jacking; shot 1 Echymipera, saw large and small bats. Weather: Broken overcast; water down 10-15cm. May 4 [illegible] Camp, Idenburg R., Netherlands New Guinea 50m. 27 stick traps, 943 snares - 0 Shot 1 Echymipera, 1 Dobsonia, 1 Emballonura This morning early left with B Dykes for the forested head of the Idenburg River som 2 km away stream across from the mouth of the lagoon. Set 218 rat traps and 2 mouse traps. The boys made snares and I spent my time hunting through the forest. The stiff grass covers the ground holds the tracks well and so much so to be heard from studying this mild deposit. Carnivore tracks very common. Bird tracks large and small common especially about the cane brakes bordering the river. Pig tracks a few. Rat tracks scarce, seen only about the cane brake thickets bordering the river. Returning from the river this evening its tried to go out jacking.
