Aug 30 Monterey Bay, off Monterey, Calif. (boat trip)
Clearly gray on the body + under the head with the white face of Arctic; several south-thers were as dark but without the "face", but prob. the same species. We flushed two additional arctic at close range from drift wood, with which we were prob. Arctics but were not very gray under the head. My impression of the wing was that the trailing edge was primarily black, the leading edge not so much so. No calls. Most ignored the boat, but one cum. sprint some times directly over head. Total - 2 Arctic.
2+Arctic, 11 prob. Arctic.
3 Elegant Tern seen just outside La Harbor on its way out.
1 ?Murre - large dark silicid with white on sides of its tail, seen from rear, c. 5 mi. W Pt. Pinos
6 Cassin Auklets - 3 groups of 2, all flushed from the water, about 20 miles out.
6 Baird's Petrel - 1 Bird Elephant Seal.
No land birds seen. On the way back we stopped at Moss Landing and saw c 90,000 Sooty Sheawaters working N along its beach, 1/2+ miles out, + additional birds in the water.
