P. DeBenedictis 1964 June 29 Deep Springs to Berkeley, Calif. Moved on, no hummingbirds at all now. There were lots of Western Kingbird but I saw only 1 Cassin's. It was up in a tree trying to pull a piece of willow stump free (for nest material) but couldn't do it. Didn't see a nest. Caught a large Petrelphus in a side canyon near here, thus went to Yosemite. Saw a Cooper Hawk 30-40 mi's of here flying not much else on the way. We stopped at Sadler Lake just W of Tioga Pass where we saw 3 Calif Gulls and 2 Gray-crowned Rosy Finches. They were eating insects and what appeared to be the roots to last years' grass from the wind out the edge of a small snow pack. Also 2 Yosemite Toads here. Went to Crane Flats but not much out here. Quite a bit of song. No Solitary Violets this time, and saw White-headed Woodpeckers. Saw two Red-breasted Sapsucker nests, both c 25-30 feet up in live Pines, and could hear young begging. Didn't find the Belted Woodpecker this time, no owls. Hemess Fir Ridge About 5:30 went to [crossed out] Flat , seeing a D.O.R. Mustelophis latulus c. 5000' on the road down from the flat. At the ridge Fox Sparrows, Nashville Wrens and Puffin-sided Towhees were fairly noisy when we arrived and gradually quit. Not until I got dark did Mt. Quail sound off. No Owls in the evening except one very distant Sawwhet. left about 11 & got home c. 2 A.M.
