P DeBenedicts 1964 11 Jan on board "Golden Bear" off P Baja Calif. My attention to the boat but later in the evening once stopped over the slick but then went on. The crew is being secretive about the boat's position but eventually we will be satisfied. The Porpoise then A.H were the only mammals noted, and the only fish were seen about 3 P.M. when a # of small fish appeared on the surface and were instantly attacked by the hawks circling following the boat. Sometimes during the noon period saw a Hermit gull sitting on a board c 4" circle x 2 1/2 ft long. Best concentration of birds were the group early in the A.M. and the gulls about 1:30-2 P.M. Noon, JAN, 34° 12' N, 180° 30' W, 70 mi. W San Nicholas Is. 12 Jan Hi, A.M about 7 when I dragged myself out of bed we were just NE of Guadalupe Is. It is much warmer now and don't need a jacket to stay on deck, just a sweat shirt. The sea is calm here and there seems to be a fair breeze (from what direction?) but absolutely no birds of any mention. We may run over 3 Fulmars, and a few -10-90° Hermit gulls are with the boat. Almost no birds on Guadalupe Is, and only saw 10-15 Western Gulls + 1 ad. Bonaparte's gull playing ball along the slick but some long gone.
