P. PeBenedicts 1964 11 Jan on board "Golden Bear" off Channel Islands, Calif. Majority are adults, but the ones that aren't are almost always 1st year birds. Herring seem to be the commonest species. At 2 went down to 2nd slip-board symposium, and remained below until 4, when I came back up & all black Diomedea nigripes after the boat, remained until about 4:30 or so. Very few birds on the ocean. 1 hum. Kittiwake going N at 2:15 P.M. 2 times Russia + 1 ad. Herring by 4:25; at 4:30 a hum. Russia + a medint phase adult or hum. Parasitic Tweeger, with small wing flash and fairly light flight crossed in front of the boat. Tweeger not obviously after the gull. 1 Brown Pelican at 4:32 and flushed a Cassin's Auklet from under the floor at 4:30; 1 gull (sp) + 1 Russia. A Brown Pelican attires on kelp at 4:45 and a K.Hiwake went by. No gulls with the boat. During the next ten minutes about 5 Larus sp. heading close N, ship goin about SSE at 12-14 knots. Much worse in the PM than in the early A.M. session. Aft about 5 a # of gulls with the boat & remained so at least 5:30. 3+ hum. Kithwake came by and also a Fulmar while spent sometime in the wake. Albatross, Fulmar, + hawks the only species that plymuch
