De Bernal, Fri 1964 252 March 6 on board "Golden Bear", Coron Is. to San Diego, Calif. about 1:30 we had a jirdrift and an abandon slip drift - saw a very light tuna. Herring trol and 2 Fulmars at this time. We then began working and spent the next two hours going in circles. About 3 saw another Fulmar. Went out a little after 5 - saw about 10 Warthorn Phalarops flying along in twos for 5's going north. All seemed to be in winter plumage; no guils around at this time. The Fulmars were in light intermediate plumage. Saw 2 whales, the high spout and I jumped out so the tail cleared water when it sounded, in the A.H., and 1 in the evening after 5. Although the day is rather lost I have some idea what is around. More or less free tomorrow. Wrote notes and went to a movie in the evening. Tired again from staying up to late. North position today: 25°25.6'N, 113°04.0'N, course var. March 7. got up in time to see both Cedros and the two San Benito Islands. We are in the channel between dawn, off Cedros & slightly S of the San Benitos. The sun had risen by the time I was up and the light was good from 6 to 7. There were good numbers of birds out at this time. Large #s of guils, mostly from the nearby islands were about. Most seemed to Western guils, flying in and from the San Benitos and following the "Bear". Est. about 200 of these were around. The next commonest species was Herring
