Got lost going back and took a long time finding the trail down, which consumed a lot of time. Had to leave the island, today with little regret, about 4 P.M. The vegetation is very reminiscent in form of the laurel woodlands along a gully in Marin Co., and even the creek shows much similarity in form. Perhaps the resistance to home is what makes the island so pleasant. The gobblers caught in the creek yesterday have large rasping teeth and probably feed in a tool-pole manner. Their presence would be enough to deter the establishment of a frog if it could be rafted to the island. The white Doddis have very large eyes, even larger than Geogee's relative to the head; wonder if they are nocturnal also. The island was very insect free and only near camp were flies bothersome; got lots of fire ants when I fell down the cliff. Ocean very warm here. Saw the Laughing Gull from the boat. Hendrickson captured another juvenile pigatbird which had tumbled in the water once kept it on board overnight. Same plumage as the one before, bank with purplish feathers. left the island about 6. Read and saw a movie in the evening. Tried went to bed but kept waking up with that cliff on my mind. Birds in the freezer. March 10 Didn't sleep well at all. Woke up stiff and sore in the legs. Wrote notes in the morning and then straightened up
