P. DeBenedictis 1964 10 Jan Vallejo to Golden Gate Bridge, Calif. left Vallejo at 11 sharp as the schedule demanded around the Golden Bear for the Galapagos with the rest of the expedition. It was a clear, but breezy, cold day. The bay very flat. Not much apparent around the California Maritime Academy, who were the Golden Bear; only a few West Grebs and Western Grebes. We went out through the Carriers Sts and then out to W side of San Francisco Bay just E of Angel Is. At the level of San Pablo Bar ( off Hwy 47 ) there was a large raft of duck, mostly lesser Scaup, with some Scoters, Western Grebe & 2 Red Th. Teal, about 35-50 Hens Gulls followed the boat, with 1 2nd year Ring Bill. About 11:30 at lunch and came out, to find that almost all the gulls following the boat were Westerns, with a few Glaucous-wing, Casp & Blue. No many duck, mostly Surf and White-wing Scoters. A remarkable # of Loons, 1 Red-thr, 1 Arctic, 2 Common, 15-25 murrelets, Also about 25 Western Grebe, [illegible] Bonaparte Gulls, and during the first half I saw a small Alcic, probably an Ancient Murrelet. Out through the gate almost nothing to be seen through the Golden Gate but with the Western Gull there were about 15 Fulmars,
