DeBono dict 1964 2 Haith aboard "Golden Bean" Guayaquil Boat entrance, Ecuador. It did not get light until about 6:30 but this didn't matter for there was almost nothing around. We saw occ. porpoise surfacing; no fish. The first birds seen were Magnificent Frigate birds circling over a japanese ship awaiting a pilot, and soon after we spotted a Brown Pelican. About 6 Hanging Grebs began flying out past the ship and by 7:15 we got under way then we about 1:30 around the bend, showing all plumages. These were all the species seen for some time, until we were well into the channel. Hanging Grebes, Brown Pelicans and Frigate birds followed the boat in flocks and several large flocks of Frigate birds were seen, up to 200-300 birds in a flock. The border of the channel is mostly mangrove forest but along the ocean there is some scrub forest. From the groups marking the channel we flushed large flocks of terns which all proved to be Sandwich Terns. They do not look as tapered as T. elegans, but are in wing and tail molt; the bill looks short as the yellow tip is hard to see, blending with the river. There were 15-20 on the first 3 days, then only 0-30/4 on the remaining ones. I also saw one smaller tern out on the water. Saw one small Harkins heron flying across the river, and what eventually was a total of 85
