bottom of the wing stroke, although the action looks quite smooth. The difference in flight is very striking to me although I find it almost impossible to state the nature of the difference.
The telphs did much less feeding than the gracilis;
a couple of times it dropped down on the water,
than got up and flew off and Bob Pyle and I spent
2 or 3 minutes watching it gullies in the Oceanis
fashion. It hovered low over the water, wings out
and tail spread, feet + legs down with only the
feet in the water. The bird took food by picking it
out of the water, placing only the bill under.
It was not as proficient at the gracilis and flycats are
only 1-5 seconds (instead of 10-30 seconds) long,
and were followed by much longer flights in between.
Some of the
gracilis were clearly circling while the path
of the ""telphs was more erratic. The tail band
was very marked, 24 as wide as the black tip,
and sometimes appeared slightly divided at the
distal end [illegible] but usually more constant. The
telphs appeared to be in high plumage while most of the
gracilis were in glossy wing and tail molt, appearing
very worn. A Sooty gull came out to the boat area
while circled and went back. At 1:30 went back to
the station. Saw a Sooty gull give the final part of the
"long call" in flight, the head [illegible]
as in the diagram.
