A Conorotus spectone tries at a pit removing small gravel, stones, and pieces of grass stems, the smaller objects with the feet or beak, the larger with the foot using the head as a brace. The feet seem to be used in rapid succession. Most smaller grave stones are siezed in the beak and lifted out and thrown aside. Several small stones were siezed with the beak and dropped in the bottom of the pit, thus kicked out. An (1 gm. stone was flipped out of the pit while the bird pulled on a 61 gm. stone moving it from a verticle position (wedged between gravel) to horizintal one at one side of the pit, and thus kicked the stone out of the pit using the feet-beak-brace system. It removed a 63 and a 34 gm stone which were em- bedded in the gravel vest to each other in rapid suc- cession, with 3 seconds. I could not see what it was eating but the bottom soil was heavily covered with chaff from grass, and presumably bird seeds. This bird dug a pit 6
