P. DeBenedictis 1964 81 Jan. Punta Espinosa, Fernandina Island, Galapagos. Mostly small animal and no fighting. Far out in the lava saw a dragonfly feeding on gnats flying over the fissure which appeared dry. Found several scattered groups of bird bone and two small Oryzomyx jaws with one tooth (309) in it. These pile as far in as we went (c. 1/4-1/2 mile from camp). A white stone seems to be sulfure dripping from the lava. Bone pile don't look like recent pellets but rather [illegible] of bones. Saw a grasshopper c. 100 yards from mangrove and Tropic. c. 50 yards. oil. Found a crater with a short upright plant growing in sulfur (not very tasty) puddles and algae. A faint green lichen on some of the cinder cone rocks. The gnats are fairly widespread and where they occur spider have built webs for them the spider is a small black species with 4 yellow lots on the abdomen : Walked back in along the mangrove squeaked up lots of Dendroica petechia and 1 worker. It feed in the forks and leaf litter under a mangrove, where they used to feed, probing into the spaces between rocks rather like a wren. No wing fluttering and lots of tail cocking. Stance very bright on the keys. Saw 2 yellow warblers come in from far out on the lava (25+ yards at least). Also saw one with a white fluffy nest material of unknown origin. A white clown-like tuft or seem floating in the weeds. No obvious seed? A small school of fish in or of the pools (longears, Horton had a yellowish long stripe, sliver below, would jump out in midair. Got back in camp about in time for dinner.
