Fulica americana 431 May 19 Lake Temescal, 420ft, Alameda Co., Calif.- by 9:41 SE ♀ had returned to and was on the nest at J6.5. He passed thru the older flock of yng mallards enroute to the nest, they at about K7.21, within making a pass at one of them. As he was going on the nest, and for a minute or two after he was settled, the M♀ continued to "pant" at K7. Foraging Red-wings, moving in close to the nest, to within 1 or 2 feet in fact, got no response from the incubating bird. About 10:00 a.m. The SE♂ was chasing a ♀ Ruddy Duck at J7. Now 10:08 a.m. The SE♀ is at L5 with 2♂♂/1♀ and a Mallard brood in the S bay area, L6+5. She is making no notes. 10:22a.m. -the ♂ sits silently on nest J6.5 while several members of the mallard brood forage nearby. I suspect there will be no egg in the K7 area until the J6 nest is hatched. Since the M♀ extended her territory S, I have not seen the SE ♀ N of the K7 clump of cat-tails or the island, that is, in the channel. 10:35; M♂ feeding at L9.24 is the deepest penetration I have seen for several days. This bird I believe is M♂(GR) has a square bottom deeply incised shield thusly- It definitely is a ♂ My call. 10:42a.m.- ♀ Redwings feeding at L6,24 are being repeatedly attacked by SE♀.
