Fulica americana 418 May 13 Lake Temescal, 420 ft., Alameda Co., Calif. -mother further, returning to the S side. SE ♂ still on nest 56.5-6:15 a.m. By 6:30 a change was made, the ♀ being on the nest. 6:34 the ♀ was turning the eggs in nest J6.5. SE ♂ not seen, but at 6:33 the MP was making quite a bit of noise at K7. The alternate resting place for this SE pair seems to be in the cat-tails at L5. Now, at 6:40 a.m. the ♂ could be heard in there making low notes. At 6:41 he came out, fed a moment, then sailed into a bird at K5 (O?). MP has been silent since about 6:33 a.m.(6:43) 6:48 a bird carried a long piece of dead cat-tail leaf from O1B out to K where it was dropped, then she cached over it. I think it was the MP. While I was writing she vanished and now strange noises are coming out of K7. SW ♂ is off the nest, 'puking' in the S inlet. 6:55 as a ♀ Mallard w/12 yng crossed along the N side of the island, the MP at K70.20 "junk-unhred". 6:58 a.m. EO ♂ on Q22, puking about my presence, but not getting off the nest. The ♀ is apparently not around. The ♂ apparently does a big share of the incubator during hatching while the ♀ takes care of the yng. No ♀ is at Q23, now she is "boonking". She was at about Q23.9, in the cat-tails. 7:03, the ♂ got off the nest for a moment, fed on the N side or some dead cat-tail stems, then
