Fulica americana 4/11 N. GULLION 1950 May 10 Lake Temescal, 450 ft. Alameda Co. Calif. - yng on into the nest box. Checking back on this eggnest. If incubation Takes 21 days, then the first two eggs began being incubated on April 18. May 11 same localty - 5:40 a.m. - apparently the SE is taking on the M♀ as another mate. M♂ was swimming at L12 while the SE♂ + M♀ were at K7. The SE♀ is on nest J6.5. 10 eggs in the nest, apparently completed. I would sure like to catch the SE♂. While watching, the SE♂ chased the SE♀ into the willows at K6♀ giving a low cough. He mounts She climbed on a branch and bowed and he mounted but did not copulate. Nest I 6.1- egg#1 pipped cracked, no pieces knocked out #2 just 1/10mm crack, others all intact. I had my hands on this SW ♀ for a moment but lost her. The ♀ on Q22, also R1. Egg#7 pipped, but the big end was covered by the old fragments of egg#4, which may have prevented further pipping. #1 has a small crack in it, about the same as #2 at I6.1. #2 is pretty well pipped but not broken thru #5 is completely intact. While I was out at the nest, the ♀ took two yng from Q22 to P16. Checking there later I caught L1 & R1, both had been on the new rebuilt structure at P16.2. The♂ came down to aid in defense of the yng.
