The sequence follows a pattern - first there is a general enlargement of the whole area at the base of the bill, mainly initiated by a swelling of the white area, producing a concave shape the first week. Then the swelling fills out, becoming more and more convex. At this time the red area commences growth posteriorly. With this growth is a general swelling of the skin or thickening of the skin just posterior to the shield, giving a whole new prominence to the shield and top of the head. The growth of the red is in a series of rings, readily evident on the actively growing shield. When this growth ceases, the whole red area thickens, hardens and becomes convex and very prominent, very markedly altering the appearance of the bird. 4/5 - released.
